I purchased a 1973 Schwinn Speedster Bicycle today. I looked on Craigslist here in the TC and found someone who was selling an old "cruiser" style bike. Come to find out when I called him it was from 1973 (AWESOME!) not to mention it was RED (EVEN MORE AWESOME!). I had this picture in my head of the bike I was hoping it to be before going to look at it... he had it listed for $50. He mentioned it came with 2 baskets that go over the back wheel (I WAS SALIVATING BY THIS POINT)... do you KNOW how many cool photo shoots I've dreamed of using an old cruiser bike in?! Ok, not a lot... but now I am!I got there to check out the bike and my jaw dropped. It was old and in need of a little TLC but she was a BEAUTY... but I didn't understand why the two baskets were on the other, newer Schwinn bicycle that was there. I walked over to the red one and said "so for $50 do the baskets come with the bike? You mentioned that it has two baskets on it." Come to find out it was their neighbor that had posted it and was fielding phone calls for them... they got the two mixed up and the red one wasn't even posted yet. They would be selling JUST THE BIKE for $100. I "hmmm"ed and "haw"ed and mentioned sadly that I just can't pay $100 for it but thanks for the time. The wife piped up (after the husband had JUST told me that a guy offered to pay him $75 for it) and asked if I would take it for $70. My eyes lit up and I said, 'if you put THOSE two baskets on the back of this old bike, I will take it for $70 right now'... they thought for a moment and said 'ok'.
I am now the proud owner of a red, rusty, 1973 Schwinn Speedster (much like the one above but not polished up) with two baskets... and I couldn't be happier!
